1 - First, you’ll need to decide whether you want to hire a professional photographer, or if you want to take your own pictures at home.
It’s easier to do DIY photos than you might think. You’ll just need a digital camera and a stand, or a smartphone and a smartphone photography stand.
I created DIY cake smash photos for my son’s first birthday, for example, and the pictures came out great!
2 - Next, you’ll need to select the time and location for your photos.
You can do photos in your home, at a studio, or in a scenic outdoor location.
3 - Then, you’ll need to select your holiday family photo outfits (more tips for that, below).
4 - Finally, you’ll need to set up your camera and strike a pose!
Make sure to test out your camera angles and distances before you snap your shot. You may need to zoom in our out on your camera, move your camera stand forward or backward, or stand closer or further away from the camera to get the perfect shot.

If you’re planning to send out holiday cards in December, having your images taken before Thanksgiving is your best bet. It gives you time to create your own cards, receive them, and prepare to mail them out right at the beginning of December.
If you’re using a professional photographer, be sure to check the photographer's turnaround time so you can schedule accordingly.
How should I dress for a holiday family photo shoot?
There are so many great outfit options for family photos. And, how you dress is entirely up to you and your family’s aesthetic. But, here are a few key decisions that will help you decide what to wear.
First, decide whether you want casual or dressy clothing.
Then, pick a color palate. I’ve listed the most popular colors for each season, below, to get you started.
As the woman of the house, I typically do all of the family holiday photo planning. To make things easiest for me, I select my outfit first and then plan everyone else’s ensemble style and color around mine.
Next, decide whether you want everyone to match exactly, or if you want to do more of a coordinated look with similar colors.
