Have a Messy House? Try These Easy Cleaning tips + Fridge Organization Ideas!

If you have lots on your plate, you probably have a messy house. No judgement, just probable FACTS! There’s nothing quite like coming home to a clean house at the end of the day, but for busy moms like me, that’s not always the case. It’s so easy to get behind on cleaning tasks, especially when you’re not organized in the first place.

One problem area in my home has always been the Fridge. But, I recently tackled the mess, using some affordable products from Amazon and West Elm. I’ve put together a video to show you my process and will share all the details in this post.

Where do You Start in a Messy House?

If your house is truly messy, you may not know where to start. A good piece of advice is to start with the rooms and spaces that bother you the most or are unable to function properly because of the mess.

If your messy home is causing you stress or anxiety, make sure you have some space that can serve as a sanctuary as you make progress in the other rooms of your home. You might consider picking up some home essentials for a cozy and calm bathroom to help you unwind and destress.

How to Avoid Getting Overwhelmed with a Messy House

Try not to get overwhelmed! If you take your cleaning and organizing one step at a time it will be manageable and you WILL make good progress. Don’t think of ALL the work that needs to be done to your messy house and just focus on one space or room as you go.

Break each room into manageable stages and be sure to celebrate and acknowledge any progress you make.

Here’s a general guideline of how to clean and organize a room in your messy house:

  • Start by getting rid of clutter and trash.

  • Designate specific locations for the items that will stay.

  • If you don’t have space for them, look into organization tools that can help you fit more items where you need them.

  • If there is still no permanent place for certain items, you may reconsider if they are essential to your home.

  • Dust and wipe down surfaces and then place items in their appropriate spots.

  • Clean/Vacuum floors and other surfaces.

Tips to Keep it Clean and Avoid a Messy House

Once your home is clean, then comes the follow-through. If you want to avoid having a messy house in the future, you’ll need to have a plan and stick to it!

Make a Schedule

Consider making a cleaning schedule. Plan out what rooms you want to clean on what specific days, or if you want to try to get weekly cleaning done on one single day.

Break up rooms and tasks as you see fit and in a way that works with your schedule. You should also consider how cleaning will fit in with your other daily routines. For example, if you do your grocery shopping on Saturdays, plan refrigerator cleaning for Fridays. That way, when you bring your groceries home, your fridge will be cleaned out and ready.

Set Reasonable Expectations to Manage a Messy House

Don’t Plan all of your large cleaning tasks all in one day. Pair larger items with easier ones so you don’t overextend yourself. Be sure to give yourself a break and understand that sometimes life will get in the way and that’s okay. As long as you are committed to getting things done on a regular basis when life makes sense, you can let some things go every now and then and get back to them another time.

Enlist Help to Keep a Clean Home

Don’t do all the work yourself! If there are other people in your household, get them to help with cleaning tasks and chores, too. This is a great way for children to learn responsibility, time management, organization and accountability.

If it works with your budget, consider offering children a small allowance or payment for the work they do, then teach them how to invest money and work towards generational wealth. Financial literacy for kids is so important to ensure a successful future.

Refrigerator Cleanup

Now, for the fridge organization! Refrigerators are a high traffic area in homes that are often not thought about in that way. We’re in and out of our fridges several times a day. If this space isn’t organized, it can be incredibly frustrating to search for items you need. It’s also easy to forget about leftovers you were planning on using up and for things to get pushed back in a corner and left to rot.

That’s not classy or cute! Haha.

Here’s how you can easily organize your fridge:
